Illness Q & A

What illnesses can be diagnosed?

Royal Suntomed Medical Group has the necessary diagnostic testing and equipment to accurately evaluate your symptoms and understand the cause. Dr. Dosunmu can diagnose conditions like:

  • Asthma
  • Infections
  • Chest pain
  • Bronchitis
  • Colds and flu
  • Migraines
  • Pneumonia

After a careful review of your symptoms, Dr. Dosunmu performs a physical examination and may request additional testing, such as X-rays or an electrocardiogram.

What is the difference between a cold and the flu?

While the common cold and influenza are both upper respiratory infections that result from a virus, they aren’t the same thing.

Cold symptoms usually appear gradually over several days and include a cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and headache. These symptoms generally get better within a week and you can use over-the-counter medications to get some relief.

Flu symptoms, on the other hand, tend to come on suddenly and are more severe than a cold. You may experience chills, fever, chronic fatigue, and muscle aches all over your body. Symptoms are often the worst during the first three or four days.

If you have an existing medical issue, such as a weakened immune system, flu symptoms may require medical intervention. Dr. Dosunmu might recommend antiviral medications, or otherwise, you’ll need to get plenty of rest and drink fluids to keep yourself hydrated.

What is pneumonia?

Pneumonia is a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection that causes inflammation in the air sacs of your lungs. The infection can affect one or both lungs, filling the sacs with fluid or pus and causing a persistent cough.

Other symptoms of pneumonia include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Shortness of breath

You may also experience chest pain and feel chronically tired throughout your illness.

Dr. Dosunmu may recommend a chest X-ray to evaluate the condition of your lungs and confirm a pneumonia diagnosis. If the infection is due to bacteria, he can prescribe antibiotics. You may also benefit from over-the-counter pain relievers and cough medicines to keep you comfortable.

If you have existing breathing issues, such as asthma or chronic bronchitis, Dr. Dosunmu may recommend more breathing treatments until you recover.
