Arthritis Q & A

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a chronic inflammation in your joints that causes persistent pain and mobility issues. There are over 100 different types of arthritis, and the condition often affects people as they age, but can also develop in young adults and children.

The main types of arthritis include:

  • Inflammatory
  • Infectious
  • Degenerative
  • Metabolic

While Dr. Dosunmu treats all arthritis conditions, the two most common are osteoarthritis, a degenerative disorder of the joints, and rheumatoid arthritis, resulting from an autoimmune disorder.

What are the symptoms of arthritis?

In addition to persistent pain and limited mobility in your joints, you may also experience symptoms like joint swelling and redness if you have arthritis.

Some types of the condition, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can result in deformities in your joint bone when left untreated.

How is arthritis diagnosed?

Dr. Dosunmu performs a physical evaluation of the affected joint, assessing redness, swelling, and tender areas. He also tests your joints for flexibility.

In some cases, Dr. Dosunmu may request bloodwork to determine what type of arthritis you have by checking for certain antibodies. He may also need imaging tests, such as X-rays, of your joints to evaluate the severity of the damage.

What treatments are available for arthritis?

There is no cure for arthritis, but with customized care, Dr. Dosunmu can help you manage your pain and prevent the progression of joint damage.

Initially, Dr. Dosunmu may recommend ice and heat therapy to reduce swelling and ease discomfort in your joints. He may also recommend over-the-counter or prescription medications to address pain and inflammation.

Physical therapy exercises can help keep your muscles that surround the joint strong and flexible. You should also try to stay active and eat a well-balanced diet to maintain a healthy weight and keep excess pressure off the arthritic joint.

If your arthritis causes severe joint deterioration, you may eventually need surgery to replace the affected joint. Surgery is usually an option for shoulder, hip, and knee joints. Dr. Dosunmu can refer you to a specialist surgeon if he feels surgery is the right treatment option for your needs.
